Rugby internationals Leo Cullen, Eoin Reddan and Kevin McLaughlin have teamed up with CMC Markets to write a new blog – the Gainline – that lifts the lid on their ‘other’ passion in life: financial spread betting.
The three stars are all self-confessed “amateur spread betters” and the Gainline (www.gainline.ie) will chart their online trading activities as they happen. The blog is the brainchild of CMC Market’s Irish chief, Declan Bourke, himself a self-confessed rugby fanatic.
“I heard on the grapevine that a few of the Irish players were into trading and I thought it would make an interesting concept,” said Mr Bourke. “People probably don’t expect professional rugby players to be actively trading in the financial markets so the Gainline is an opportunity to see a completely different side to them.
“The blog is not only for people who already dabble in the markets but for people who are interested in trading and would like to learn how to get involved,” Mr Bourke added. “It should be fun and we’re delighted to have signed up the three players.”
The blog allows followers to chart the progress of each player’s trades over the course of the season.
Both Leo Cullen and Eoin Reddan are part of Ireland’s 30-man squad for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, while Kevin McLaughlin is heading into the new Pro 12 season with Leinster.
“I’ve been trading for about a year now,” said Leo Cullen at the launch of the Gainline in CMC Markets’ Dublin headquarters. “Eoin, Kevin and myself talk a lot about our trading, we share tips and strategies and whatever other information might be helpful, so the blog will be a good way to stay focussed.
“I’d usually have one or two trades on the go at any given time, so I’m looking forward to landing [In New Zealand] and I’ll have a look at the markets when we get settled down there,” said Leo.
